Some Basic Info: AtomicLearning is a web-based software training program that offers easy-to-follow tutorials on more than 110 applications. Any Siloam Springs School District student or parent can use the access code and receive free computer instruction. If you would like the access codes, contact the school office or your child's teacher. To go to the AtomicLearning website, just click on AL's image above! There are many resources online for parents and kids to learn more about proper behavior online, and a few are listed below. But it's possible that internet-savvy teens believe they know what they need to know to stay safe -- stay out of chat rooms, don't post identifying information on public websites, report any contacts made that make you feel uncomfortable, etc. -- but they don't realize they're participating in lots of inappropriate behavior that can get them into big trouble later. Things like allowing mere acquaintances to be their "friends" on social networking sites; posting pictures of their friends without their permission; posting information that they'd really rather not everyone know; or even using a cell phone to send private pictures of themselves to someone they are trusting won't send it on to anyone else. Some of these activities can leave teens with a mark on their character that future employers, college reps, or even sports scouts will hold against them. They could even end up in serious legal trouble. Two good rules of thumb are: 1. Set your social networking site (SNS) to private and only allow real friends access. 2. Never post to an SNS or send by cell phone anything you wouldn't want placed on the school bulletin board. Scholarship-Finding Services?
Some parents have asked about programs for which they've received an invitation
(to a free meeting) that guarantees to find full funding for college. Our
advice is to beware of any program that you have to pay for a service you could
get for free (they often bring up the fee after the meeting) . You can get free
financial aid help from college financial aid counselors, school counselors,
scholarship program directors, or the internet. Read more on the US Federal
Trade Commission website at
